Kumana National Park (formerly known as Yala East National Park) is a premier wildlife sanctuary located in the southeastern corner of Sri Lanka within the Ampara District. Spanning over 18,148 hectares of dry-zone tropical thorn forests, floodplains, and mangrove lagoons, Kumana is internationally celebrated as one of the most important bird-nesting and breeding grounds in South Asia. Contiguous with the southeastern border of Yala National Park, Kumana features over 20 shallow lagoons and natural tanks ('villus') fed by the Kumbukkan Oya river. Over 255 species of birds have been recorded within the park, including massive flocks of migratory waterfowl, painted storks, spoonbills, black-necked storks, pelicans, herons, and rare endemic species. With its secluded wilderness atmosphere, rich avifauna, and populations of wild elephants and leopards, Kumana offers an extraordinary, peaceful safari experience for dedicated birdwatchers and nature photographers.
