Ăśber Kurunegala

Historische nordwestliche Provinzhauptstadt, umgeben von markanten riesigen Felsformationen und antiken Ruinen.

Kurunegala is a prominent historic city located in the North Western Province of Sri Lanka, serving as the provincial capital and a vital cultural transportation hub. Framed by distinctive massive rock outcrops that loom directly over the town—each named after animals, including Elephant Rock (Ethagala), Tortoise Rock, and Eel Rock—Kurunegala served as a royal capital of Sri Lanka during the medieval era in the 13th century. The city combines bustling urban commerce with rich historical monuments, including temple ruins, ancient palace remnants, and a towering 88-foot Buddha statue perched atop Ethagala rock offering panoramic views of surrounding coconut estates and paddy fields. Kurunegala also serves as the convenient geographical gateway to the ancient rock fortress of Yapahuwa and the cultural triangle.
