Über Yapahuwa

Königliche Zitadelle und Felsenfestung aus dem 13. Jahrhundert mit einer verzierten Steintreppe.

Yapahuwa is a magnificent 13th-century medieval royal citadel and rock fortress located in the Kurunegala District of the North Western Province of Sri Lanka. Rising sharply as a massive 90-meter high granite monolith, Yapahuwa served briefly as the capital of Sri Lanka and the repository of the sacred Tooth Relic during a turbulent period of South Indian invasions. The fortress is most famous for its breathtaking, highly ornate ornamental stone stairway that ascends steeply up the rock face, adorned with exquisitely carved stone lions, dancing figures, and pierced stone tracery windows reminiscent of Dravidian architecture. Flanked by defensive ramparts and ancient moat systems, Yapahuwa offers history enthusiasts an extraordinary, less-crowded archaeological treasure.
