Adam's Peak (known locally as Sri Pada, meaning 'Sacred Footprint') is a towering 2,245-meter conical mountain located in the Ratnapura district of the Sabaragamuwa Province in Sri Lanka. Revered as a sacred pilgrimage site for over a millennium, the summit features a rock formation resembling a massive human footprint—venerated by Buddhists as the footprint of Lord Buddha, by Hindus as that of Lord Shiva, and by Christians and Muslims as that of Adam or St. Thomas. Every year during the pilgrimage season (stretching from Unduwap Poya in December to Vesak Poya in May), thousands of devotees and adventure hikers ascend the thousands of stone steps illuminated by electric string lights along the mountain trail. Climbers traditionally set off during the dead of night (around 1:00 AM or 2:00 AM) to reach the sacred summit just before dawn, where they are rewarded with the breathtaking, mystical shadow of the peak projected across the surrounding cloud forests, accompanied by a magnificent sunrise. Surrounded by the pristine Peak Wilderness Sanctuary, Adam's Peak offers an unforgettable physical and spiritual journey into Sri Lanka's misty central heights.
