The Knuckles Mountain Range (known locally as Dumbara Hills) is a rugged, highly biodiverse mountain massif located in the Central Province of Sri Lanka, north-east of Kandy. Spanning over 21,000 hectares across the Kandy and Matale districts, the range derives its name from its distinctive series of folded peaks and ridges that visually resemble the knuckles of a clenched fist when viewed from a distance. Designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Knuckles range encompasses diverse ecological zones ranging from semi-evergreen dry forests to montane cloud forests, pygmy forests, and grasslands. It shelters thousands of endemic plant and animal species, including leopards, barking deer, purple-faced langurs, and countless endemic birds and reptiles. The foothills and deep valleys are home to remarkably untouched traditional farming communities such as Heeloya and Meemure, where villagers practice ancient terraced paddy cultivation and spice farming. Offering world-class mountain trekking trails, gushing waterfalls, crystal-clear river pools, and dramatic viewpoints like Mini World's End, the Knuckles range is an unmissable paradise for serious hikers and eco-explorers.
