Wilpattu National Park is the largest and oldest protected wildlife sanctuary in Sri Lanka, situated along the northwest coast spanning over 131,693 hectares across the Puttalam and Anuradhapura districts. Characterized by dense, impenetrable dry-zone jungle, scrublands, and a unique geological network of natural rain-fed water basins known as 'villus', Wilpattu offers a deeply authentic, rugged wilderness safari experience. The name 'Wilpattu' translates directly to 'Land of Lakes', referencing the dozens of picturesque, sand-rimmed natural water tanks that dot the landscape and serve as vital drinking holes for native wildlife. The park is a prime sanctuary for the elusive Sri Lankan leopard, majestic sloth bears, wild Asian elephants, spotted deer, water buffaloes, mugger crocodiles, and a prolific array of endemic and migratory water birds. Steeped in ancient legend, Wilpattu is also historically significant; according to the Mahavamsa chronicle, King Vijaya landed on these shores, and Queen Kuveni once ruled from local cave settlements.
