Polonnaruwa is a magnificent UNESCO World Heritage Site located in the North Central Province of Sri Lanka, serving as the glorious second capital of the island following the decline of Anuradhapura in the late 10th century. Flourishing between the 11th and 13th centuries under the rule of powerful monarchs like King Parakramabahu I and King Nissankamalla, Polonnaruwa represents the pinnacle of medieval Sinhalese architectural and hydraulic engineering brilliance. The sprawling archaeological park preserves remarkably intact ruins of royal palaces, council chambers, audience halls, and sacred temple precincts.
