Mirissa

Day 10: Mirissa – Serenity & Sea Adventures Wildlife Wonders of Udawalawe Today, we continue our journey into Sri Lanka’s southern wilderness with a visit to the magnificent Udawalawe National Park, located on the border of the Sabaragamuwa and Uva provinces. Established in 1972, this protected area was created to provide a sanctuary for wildlife displaced by the construction of the Udawalawe Reservoir on the Walawe River and to protect its catchment area. Spanning over 30,000 hectares, Udawalawe is one of the country’s most important national parks, renowned for its rich biodiversity and especially its thriving population of Sri Lankan elephants, which can be observed here year-round. Our day begins with a heartwarming visit to the Udawalawe Elephant Transit Home, a facility established in 1995 to care for orphaned, sick, and injured baby elephants. Operated by the Department of Wildlife Conservation with support from the Born Free Foundation, the home provides crucial care until the elephants are strong enough to return to the wild. Visitors can witness the elephants being bottle-fed and enjoy watching the young calves play and socialize — a truly moving and educational experience. Over the years, dozens of elephants have been successfully rehabilitated and released back into their natural habitat, where they continue to be monitored for their safety. Following this visit, you'll have the option to embark on a half-day or full-day game drive into Udawalawe National Park. In addition to elephants, the park is home to a variety of wildlife, including leopards, fishing cats, jungle cats, water buffalo, spotted deer, and more than 180 species of birds, making it a paradise for nature lovers and wildlife photographers alike. Mirissa

Day 11 ; Whales watching & relax on Beach Sri Lanka is justifiably celebrated for its pristine tropical beaches, kissed by the warm waters of the Indian Ocean. Today offers the perfect opportunity to unwind and relax after the previous day’s travels. Whether you choose to bask in the sun on the powdery white sands, take a dip in the pool, or explore the scenic surroundings, the day is yours to enjoy at your own pace. Welcome to Mirissa, one of the most picturesque coastal towns in southern Sri Lanka, famed globally for offering some of the best whale and dolphin watching experiences in the world. Embark on a thrilling yet comfortable boat excursion into the Indian Ocean, where—if you're lucky—you may witness the majestic Blue Whale, the largest animal on Earth, as well as Bryde’s Whales, Sperm Whales, Killer Whales, and Fin Whales. Alongside these giants, playful pods of dolphins—including Common, Bottlenose, Spinner, Risso’s, and Striped dolphins—often delight onlookers by leaping and dancing across the waves. Not far from Mirissa lies Weligama, a coastal town renowned for its iconic stilt fishermen—a captivating sight unique to Sri Lanka. Perched on crossbars tied to slender poles embedded in the seabed, these fishermen spend hours balanced in the water, casting lines in hopes of catching small fish. This traditional fishing method, believed to have emerged shortly after World War II, remains a powerful symbol of resilience, having survived the devastations of the 2004 tsunami. Today, these skilled fishermen can still be seen along the southern coast in places like Koggala, Kaththaluwa, and Ahangama, offering a glimpse into Sri Lanka’s enduring cultural heritage. During your seaside adventures, you may also spot flying fish, sea turtles, manta rays, and occasionally even reef sharks gliding through the clear blue waters.
